Endemic Plants of Antalya

Due to the region’s ecological conditions, plants that grow only in that region and cannot be grown anywhere else in the world are called endemic plants. Antalya, which contains many natural beauties, draws attention to its endemic plants.

Approximately 500 of 650 endemic plants in the Mediterranean Region grow within the provincial borders of Antalya. Two hundred of them are exclusive to our city of Antalya. We wanted to introduce you to the most well-known of these endemic plants, many of which are under protection and play an active role in promoting our region.

Kemer Orchid (Ophrys Climacis)

The Kemer Orchid, whose central spreading region is the Kemer, is only found in this region in the world. This valuable plant is under protection by the Antalya Orchids and Biodiversity Conservation Association (ANTOK) due to the unconscious removal of its tubers and the destruction of the natural areas to obtain sahlep.

Sea Daffodil (Pancratium Maritimum)

Sea daffodil, a bulbous plant from the daffodil family, grows only on sea coasts and dunes in the world. Sea daffodils bloom between August and October. Sea daffodils with fragrant flowers were under protection by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2016, as they are threatened with extinction due to intense urbanization and tourism. Sea daffodils, which are the center of attention of local and foreign tourists, enchanting their appearance and scent, add colour to the Lara beach.

Olympos Saffron (Crocus Wattiorum)

The only known spreading area of ​​Olympos Saffron until today is Olympos Beydağları National Park. Olympos Saffron, which blooms in October and November, can spread up to 1400 meters high in the crevices on the rocks, under and in the pine forest’s openings. According to the researches, it is stated that the plant, which is protected by the Antalya Orchids and Biological Diversity Conservation Association (ANTOK), has only 253 roots left in the world, and these are in the Hisarçandır District. Today, the quarries opened on the foothills where the plant grows put this rare and valuable species in danger of extinction.

Peony (Paeonia Turcica)

Also known as the bear rose, the peony became the symbol flower of EXPO 2016 Antalya in 2016. Peony, which is herbaceous and woody form, is a perennial plant with tubers. This flower is a gene center in Anatolia; It is known as a plant species that grows in Antalya, Burdur and Denizli provinces. Peonies, Turkey’s different regions at KEMA, Tombak, Bocar, Atlas, cuckoos, Blood Flower, Wild Rose, Pink Mountain, and Forest Rose.
